Zambia's agro ecological zones

1 Suitable
2 Moderately Suitable
3 Marginally Suitable

Zambia’s agriculture is shaped by four distinct agro-ecological zones, each defined by differences in rainfall, soils, and growing season. Region I is the driest, with short seasons and frequent drought risk; Regions IIa and IIb share medium rainfall but differ in soil type, with IIa dominated by clay soils and IIb by sandy soils; and Region III receives the highest rainfall but has more leached soils.

Understanding these zones is essential for choosing the right crops and seed varieties—whether highly suitable, moderately suitable, or marginally suitable—to maximise yields, manage risk, and support sustainable farming across the country. The map below highlights these zones alongside the crops best adapted to each.
